LED lighting is usually sold as a simple upgrade: lower energy use, longer life, and better control over brightness and color. That part is true, but poor installation choices can wipe out a lot of those benefits. LEDs are not as forgiving as older incandescent bulbs. They depend on the right fixture, the right driver or power supply, proper heat management, and compatible controls to perform as intended. Choosing the Wrong LED for the FixtureÂ
One of the most common mistakes is assuming any LED bulb or lamp that fits physically will work properly in the fixture. That is not how LED systems work. If a bulb is not rated for enclosed use, heat can build up and shorten its life or damage performance.

When installing dimmable LEDs, confirm three things before the job starts: that the bulb or fixture is actually dimmable, that the dimmer is rated for LED loads, and that the manufacturer lists compatibility information. Skipping that step creates avoidable callbacks.

That matters even more in garages, exterior runs, commercial buildings, patio systems, and year-round decorative lighting, where exposure and runtime are higher. The old rule still applies: use the product built for the job. Outdoor-rated products belong outdoors. Commercial-duty products belong in hard-use commercial settings. Decorative string lighting and architectural accent lighting should be selected with weather, voltage, connectors, and mounting method in mind.
Forgetting About Maintenance and Future ServiceÂ
A final mistake is installing LEDs in a way that makes future service harder than necessary. This shows up in inaccessible drivers, unlabeled retrofit fixtures, messy strip-light connections, and products mounted where replacement requires disassembling half the fixture or the ceiling.
A clean installation is not just about what works today. It should also make sense a year from now when a driver needs to be checked, a control issue appears, or another technician has to identify what was installed. UL’s retrofit guidance is especially relevant here because proper labeling and listed conversion methods help avoid confusion later.
